The Cowes Round Island Race

If you only take part in one race in your life it must be the Round Island Race. The race is held every year in June and is the biggest single race in the world. Last year over 1900 yachts crossed the start line, now that is very very busy! For the first hour or so, there is rarely more than a few yards between you and the nearest boat, in fact you are generally surrounded by yachts within a few yards. It is incredibly exciting and potentially quite 'buttock clenching' as you duck under the stern of one yacht , missing it by 3 inches, seconds before tacking 3 ft short of driving into the port side of another yacht - and that is literally no exaggeration, it is fantastic fun and bloody hard work!

We get together on the Thursday evening, train on the Friday, it is quite handy for the crew to be able to tack the boat and power up within 10 seconds in a fleet of that size!
Friday night in Cowes, a quiet one as we are generally up by 5.30am the following morning.
