RYA Day Skipper Course

The crew on the rail of the yacht on an RYA Day Skipper Course

The day skipper course is where it gets a bit more involved! Ultimately you are training to be capable of skippering a yacht, and there is world of a difference between skippering and being even the most competent crew member. When a decision needs to be made, the crew look at you and hopefully will then do as you say - quite scary really!

One of the many reponsibilities you will have is getting the yacht to where you want to be before last orders, failure to do so will make you very unpopular with the crew!

You will either have completed a Day Skipper Theory course in which case your navigational skills will be quite well developed or you will have a fair amount of experience in this area. The Day skipper practical course focusses ( never quite sure whether are two s's in that word ) quite a bit on honing these skills. Learning naviagation on the RYA Day Skipper Course

This is a practical course, so it is assumed that you can sail a yacht reasonably efficiently. Whilst you will learn more about optimum sail trim and sail plan selection, there is possibly more emphasis placed on learning how to be a good, practical, skipper. Finally and possibly most important to most aspirant skippers, we spend a some considerable time doing that most terrifying bit - parking the boat and leaving the berth. Hopefully by the end of the five days course, you won't need a spare pair of pants at the ready whenever you come into a mooring!

Check the rya course calendar to see when we have planned courses.  If you can't find suitable dates then drop us a line, we are flexible!
