International Certificate of Competence - ICC
Despite the joys of the Solent, many of you want to do a bit of International Sailing!
Sadly we don't get too much weather like this on the South Coast, so you need to go abroad to get the azure seas, blue skies and 27 degrees of warmth. It used to be the case that all it took was a ragged log book and a steely eyed assurance that you are perfectly capable of skippering a yacht, to find yourself motoring happily out of the marina in Palma, Kos or even Antigua. In the modern age where litigation lurks around every corner, those days are gone. You now need some form of certification to prove that you are capable of taking charge of a yacht, and the ICC is increasingly becoming the acceptable foreign standard. This standard is broadly equivalent to the RYA Day Skipper, and if you have a certificate at this level, then you can send it off to the RYA and in exchange for a small libation, they will issue you with an ICC. In the absence of such a certificate then you will need to pass an ICC assessment, which takes a weekend if you have the necessary expertise, or you will need to do an ICC practical course.
