RYA Yachtmaster - The Holy Grail

Yachtmaster taking the helm of a yachtYachtmaster is the level we have all been aiming for.  The RYA do lay down recommended targets of experience which would be expected from a candidate before he or she attempted the examination, but these are merely guidelines, and need to be interpreted as such.  2500 miles is a lot of sailing, but if these miles have been accumulated over a single atlantic crossing, then the yachtsman in question would probably have had relatively few learning opportunites compared with 90 weekends in the Solent and half a dozen channel crossings.  The definition of a Yachtmaster is someone who is capable of 'handling a yacht safely in any conditions' - again a useful descriptor but not very helpful for the aspirant student.

Crew and skipper on an RYA Yachtmaster course

In essence you will be expected to demonstrate all of the skills of a but with considerably more fluency and aplomb.  For instance time taken to complete a coastal passage plan will be less, you will be expected to demonstrate a very good sense of all extraneous factors which might affect the outcome of a particular plan, whether it be mooring the boat, or tacking through a racing fleet.  You should not find the idea of sailing in close proximity to other boats intimidating, unless they are Sunsail charterers of course!  The Yachtmaster course is a 4 day preparation course leading up to the examination at the end of the week.  It is worth noting that Steve, who will probably run the prep. course for you is himself a Yachtmaster Examiner, and therefore well placed to coach you in any areas of weakness, and to give you a very good idea of what the examiner is likely to ask you to do for him or her!
