2008 South Downs Pub Sailing Regata

Fancy having a lot of fun on the water, and raising funds for a fantastic local charity at the same time?

It is not very often you get a chance to combine so many good things in one go... Sailing, Racing, banter and beer, and as a bonus, raising some money for Dreams Come True, a local and very worthwhile charity.

Dreams Come True.

Dreams Come True Charity exists to lift the spirits of terminally and seriously ill children by fulfilling their most treasured dream. The charity helps children with both life threatening and long term degenerative illnesses, including leukemia, cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy. The only limit to a dream is a child’s imagination and popular requests include experiencing the magic of Disney World and swimming with dolphins. Since the charity was founded in 1988, we have fulfilled dreams for over 3,000 children. With your support, in our 20th year, we can pass our target of making a dream a day come true.

For more information on Dreams Come True Charity please visit our website at www.dctc.org.uk

The Event

The idea is very simple, each pub will submit a team of up to 8 crew members including an appropriately experienced skipper, to race a 37' yacht against the teams from other pubs in the area, sailing identical yachts, around the Solent for the weekend. We are expecting a minimum of 12 pub teams and quite possibly twice that!

There is to be a splendid Gala dinner on the Saturday night in Cowes and a Prize Giving ceremony on Sunday 5th October for the race winners, teams and their sponsors who have raised the most money for the charity.

Press and the public are invited to attend and support the event, culminating in a presentation by Dreams Come True. Spirit Sailing will also be offering ‘Dreams’ in the form of fun rides on the water for children from the charity wishing on Spirit Sailing’s own Rib.

The emphasis is not quite the same as the usual regatta. Whilst the racing is central to the weekend, and the competition will be fierce, the extraneous elements tend to take on just as much significance. The shoreside activities always take on a life of their own with various unexpected side-line competitions developing as well as those that are planned! In short, this will be a huge fun event, as well as providing some excellent competition on the water, and at the same time raising some money for Dreams Come True.
